In a lecture at Ashesi University on Tuesday November 2, His excellency the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia announced that the government plans to issue every newborn child a National Identification number from 2022.

Dr. Bawumia said a link would be created between the Births and Deaths Registry, the Ghana Health Service, the Ghana Statistical Service, the Immigration Service, the police and the National Identification Authority.

This is part of plans of government to get a database of all citizens under the digitalization agenda.

He revealed that Ghana operates a system “where most of the population could not be uniquely identified.”

He also revealed that the Ghana Card will be accepted as an electronic passport globally by the end of the first quarter of the year 2022.
